The Children Of God
A Poem by Boston high school student Katie Houde.
So far in 2018, there have been 232 children killed and 506 children injured in our country because of gun violence. Since Valentine’s Day, and the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida there have been 69 children killed and 148 injured in our country because of guns.
In the Beatitudes, Jesus is calling on us to be peacemakers. This is an active call to be engaged in our communities so that God’s peace…God’s Kingdom is available to all who seek it out in their lives. Being a peacemaker is not about solving the problems of the world, but it is about being an everyday advocate, being the voices and bodies that challenge the injustice, violence, and oppression within our own communities, in our own neighborhoods. It is also being in solidarity with those who are working and challenging the status quo and working for hope, compassion, and justice in this place at this time.
Since the Shooting in Parkland, Florida students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have become engaged citizens, everyday advocates, and peacemakers. They have inspired youth and young adults from across the country. Now it is our turn to be in solidarity with these courageous young Americans speaking out against our addiction to guns and violence in this country.
On March 24, Covenant Student Ministries will be coordinating a group to attend the March For Our Lives Rally on Public Square in Downtown Cleveland. If you would like to be part of this movement, an everyday advocate here in Cleveland, I want to extend a personal invitation to you! Join us, march with us, and be in solidarity with the youth and young adults in this country, in this community, crying out for change.
On Saturday, March 24th we will meet at 8:45 AM in the parking lot at Church of the Covenant and take the RTA-HealthLine down to public square. Please join us!
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” Matthew 19:14
